Herbie

Date of Birth/Age:
6 August 2006

Gender:
Male

Species:
Dog

Breed:
Mixed (mainly Retriever-type features)

Weight:
22 kg (48 lb)

Background:
Herbie is one of a litter of 13. Mum had given birth to numerous litters on the street, all of whom had been unwanted by the local community and died as a result. A local lady wanted this litter to have a chance, so SCAD took them into care at two days old, along with mum. Mum was so exhausted from feeding 13 pups that SCAD staff had to assist by hand-rearing.

Features:
An athletic, medium-sized dog with a very short, smooth white coat, with a few large honey-coloured patches on his back. Herbie has some cute black pigment spots on his underbelly. His large, erect ears and soft 'Cleopatra' marked eyes make him very handsome indeed. Minimal grooming is required.

Character:
Herbie is categorized as a special needs dog due to his nervous disposition and his bite history. To our knowledge, he has twice bitten people – both times when he was startled by quick-moving strangers in the adoption yard. Herbie is generally a calm, gentle dog who is wary of new people and takes his time getting to know new faces and situations. Once he knows and trusts you it's 100% love! He is a good alarm dog who will warn you of people approaching, but quiets when asked. He is the leader of our current pack, but exerts his authority with presence (body language) rather than aggression - an ideal quality in a 'top dog'. He loves swimming and running off-lead, but is equally content to walk by your side on-lead. Suited to a home with older teenage children where he will get loads of exercise and stimulation. June 09: Herbie has now completed his 10 week training and is now a completely different dog. He has changed from a nervous fearful dog into a very calm assertive boy. He does still show some fearful behaviour but does not lash out. He calms down when he is shown that their is nothing to worry about. Herbie will also allow males to walk him whereas before he would run in the opposite direction. Out of all the dogs on the course he was the one that showed marked improvement each week. It was an amazing process to watch. Herbie would suit and owner that is calm and patient as he will still need a little encouragement every now and then.
