ทุกวันนี้มีสุนัขจรจัดประมาณ 300,000 ตัวอยู่ตามท้องถนนของกรุงเทพ และแมวอีกจำนวนมากที่หลบซ่อนอยู่ ไม่รู้กว่ากีปีมาแล้วที่สุนัขถูกฆ่าหรือถูกย้ายถิ่นเพื่อตอบสนองต่อเสียงต่อว่าของชุมชนหรือเพราะความเข้าใจผิดในการลดหรือควบคุมโรคพิษสุนัขบ้า ซึ่งเวลาและประสบการณ์ได้พิสูจน์แล้วว่าความพยายามเหล่านั้นล้มเหลวในการแก้ปัญหาระยะยาว

For fast-breeding mammals such as cats and dogs, when food and shelter are available, the stray animal population promptly returns to previous levels as cats and dogs from surrounding areas move in to fill the artificially created vacuum, and litter sizes increase. In optimum breeding conditions, one female dog and her offspring can produce up to 67,000 puppies in six years.

SCAD recognises that along with other stray animal management strategies, sterilising Bangkok’s strays to control the population is an important and humane component in tackling the problem effectively.

Working in target neighbourhoods, SCAD encourages whole communities to become involved in Animal Birth Control (ABC) projects. With their help, community cats and dogs are taken to SCAD’s Health Centre to be sterilised, vaccinated against rabies and treated for injury or disease. When fit enough they are returned to their home territory.
